Hi there! We're Sean and Allison, a horticulturist and a former Science teacher from the PNW in WA state zone 8b/9a. We LOVE to garden together & teach you about all things plants and flowers. We sold our home in 2022 and are searching for our new home and property so we're currently growing plants in containers which is a lot of fun.
We're authors, inventors of two garden tools, The Little Dibby and The Dibby XL (both patent pending), professional speakers, and content creators. Sean, with his BS and MS in Environmental Horticulture, will teach you using his years of experience including landscape design, management, and maintenance. Allison will bring a unique teaching perspective as a National Board Certified Science teacher and from years of tending to her own plants and flowers.
Check out our first book published "The First-time Gardener: Growing Plants and Flowers," (Cool Springs Press, 2021), our website, spokengarden.com, and our bitesize podcast, "The DIY Garden Minute."

In this video, we just received a light weight Vego 130-foot retractable hose to replace our heavy construction hose and we need to build a versatile, movable platform to attach it to so we can use it in multiple places. This retractable garden hose is super light weight and will really help us when watering! See Sean build a DIY platform to attach this new hose system to and where we place it....

Winter Seed Sowing Flowers in January 🌿🌱
If I were you, I would think twice about planting your morning glory in the ground. It is very invasive and once it takes over you will never be able to get rid of it. It grows like a weed in our area. It climbs everything including your other plants and when I say climbs, I mean, wraps itself around spirally, and is very hard to remove, especially from tender plants. It also travels underground and pops up everywhere including your grass! And your neighbors will have to deal with it also. We didn’t plant it. We are constantly removing it from other plants, our wrought iron fence and anything with a 1 inch diameter or less. Not sure if it will wrap around wider things than that.
What type of fertilizer numbers on these - it is July in NY and no flowers on two baskets
Guys those zucchini are ready. If you let them get bigger they will reach baseball bat size but seemingly flavor is lost. ROCIO is a very tasty variety.
Thank you very much
Thank you for your insight to growth
We need part 2 lol 😆
i'd taken the one, at the corner of the house, much lower than you did
We have had so much rain. I'm about to give up!
so helpful thank you!
Thank you for this short and very informative video !
Glad it was helpful!
Buds, but barely any blooms. Ideas?
Hi there! Good question. This could be your plants just haven't had enough time to flower yet and they are getting there. Also, if the plants have had too much water and are kept under too wet conditions, this can delay flowering. And, if you pruned or pinched your plants in the recent past, then that can also delay blooming. There could also be a sun light/shad component happening here, depending on which impatiens you are growing. Action Steps: Let the top 1-2 inches of soil dry out a bit before watering again. Also, if your impatien plant is in a container, try moving it to either a little more sunny or shady location to see if that helps. Hope this helps and thank you for your question.
Thank you! Right to the point, easy to watch (some gardeners zoom out way too far), and you have such a calm voice.
Thank you for saying this! We hope it was helpful and we appreciate you watching! 😊😀👍
I discovered Verbena this spring. Our plant has been spectacular. Thank you for the information.
Thank you and we hope you truly enjoy your verbena plant(s)!
Thank you. I'm growing cannas for the first time this year. Very helpful!
Thank you for watching and VERY happy to know that it helped!
Oh i just saw Video and the bug issue expressed , and i found answer to bug problem in my mixed Veggy and wild flower gardens around my yard and the solution for my was getting frogs n toads , Yup the y Gobble up them bugs
VERY cool! Frogs are fun, anyway, but to use them for this is awesome. 😉😀👍👍
Hello! I have a Shasta daisy plant that was attacked by Asian beetles. They’ve eaten all the white petals. What can I do to save it?
Wow, we are sorry to hear this. Neem Oil is shown to be somewhat effective in controlling Japanese Beetles, but not sure about Asian Beetles. You could try Neem Oil, but read the label to make sure it can be used on this specific pest. Not all Neem Oils are created the same. Also, call, text, or email your local county (province?) extension agency to see what they recommend you do, if anything. Hope that helps and keep us posted.
Taking care of my neighbors plants this was very helpful thank you ❤🙏
Glad it was helpful!
Great tips guys, I’ve been wondering how to keep these “tidy”…
how do I edge my mulched flower bed where it meets the sidewalk? Every heavy rain sends the mulch right over the concrete.
Great video! Thanks !
Thanks
Will this work with inpatients in hanging baskets? I have one I need to revive
Yes, it will. 😃😀
The flowers look very much like orchids I just grabbed this plant at the grocery store very delightful
I recently planted candle lilies and what I have noticed our little holes on the leaves is this a host plant for butterflies or anything else that would be eating it thanks
Thank you!!
I'm a first time homestead person or ever to call it, laugh out loud. I belive I had killed some of my crops mistakenly it as weeds, my issue is the seedlings at the early stages, I can't quite tell. But thank you for the tips and advice❤ very helpful
❤❤❤❤great
You guys are great. How did this cordy experiment turn out? I am looking to do exactly this. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.
As I sent this I saw your update. Thank you so much for showing me your experiment. It is very helpful in my deciding how to proceed.
This is exciting!
I pinch mine with my nails. It breaks easily, way faster than using a tool. By practice I'm just as exact. 😊
So when you say right now is not the time..... When is the time to cut them back? Thx
My problem is the large gasket on the face of the sprayer; its causing some of the water to shoot out of the side of the sprayer when the water is also coming out the front of the sprayer. How do I replace that gasket so that the water only comes out the front of the sprayer?
Great video!!
This was helpful
Thank you! Glad it was helpful. 😊😀
EXCELLENT I always just leave the plants lopsidedly in the pot…I’ll try this!
Great! Let us know how it goes!
YIKES!!!! Thanks ! I forgot! Running out now to do it!!!🌸🌸🌸🌸
Was looking for a solution, unfortunately the video is just rehashing the situation. ... On to video #12
These are my favorite flowers ever.. so cute and pretty. Super excited to plant!
Mine has gone wild! It’s about a meter wide and over two feet tall. It’s flowering right now but I need to know how to prune it. Help
Hi there! Dusty Millers can be a little tricky sometimes because it depends on which one you are growing. Take a look at the interior of the plant; the inner stems and even the crown (icydk: the soil surface where the roots and shoots meet) to see if any new shoots or leaves are starting to grow. If so along any inner stems (inside the canopy) or growing up from the crown, you can then give your plant a decent "hair cut" to re-establish it's size and form. This can be pruning away 1/3 of the total plant canopy or much more drastic, depending on the situation. If you do this, be sure before hand that the plant is well hydrated and in the best health it can be so it can take this pruning stress and can recover faster. Also do this type of pruning during this time of year on more cloudy day and in the earlier morning so sun intensity and heat are at their lowest possible and aren't already stressing the plant out. If you plant isn't exhibiting any inner new growth or crown growth right now, wait to see if it does the next month or two and then prune away what you need to. We should make a video on this because we end up doing this every year to our dusty miller's and it can be a little tricky and subjective to specific conditions. Hopefully that helps and you can assess your plants accordingly. Let us know how it goes!
Very helpful. Would I do my petunias the same way? Thx!
Yes it is helpful! I haven’t known what to do with them. Thanks!
Can you post an update when they grow out more? I’m curious to see the difference.
I got seeds from the local botanical garden and I never got to see what the flowers look like so I don't know what color I'm going to get but boy am I excited
That's VERY exciting! Plant surprises can be the best. 😉😊
